Link to Model Airplane New's page on the winners... MAN
Jeff contacted me about creating a custom Best Pilot Gunther Rall that featured his very own face. As we discussed the pilot and proofs of the face, I always try to ask what the pilot is going in because, well, I love model airplanes and like to see what my customers are up to. Wow! I was blown away by what Jeff showed me! If you are a fan of the FW-190, you know that it has very peculiar landing gear that is canted inward. That is seen modeled in various stages of success within the hobby. When I saw Jeff's 190, I knew he nailed it! He commented that the stance of the gear was a "pet peeve" of his and he worked very hard to get that correct on his model. Things like that really make the difference. The model looks like a winner just in the primer!
On the left is the "full-scale" Jeff and the right is the 1/5 scale Jeff ready for duty!
Jeff was kind enough to share pics of his build with Best Pilots. As you can see, the detail is amazing. The slightly faded paint, shading and weathering on the instrument panels make this look like the full-size!
I think any Luftwaffe pilot would feel right at home here!
Jeff positions, um, himself in the cockpit. Positioning of the pilot figure is so critical to realism. Jeff looks right at home!
All painted up. Jeff, being a stickler for detail (You think?), also created scale restraint belts to fasten the Best Pilot into the cockpit. He cut little slots under the fur collar on Gunther and threaded the belts through the hollow-cast pilot. He said it was very easy to do and looks great!
Congratulations on a well deserved award and thanks Jeff for being a great customer and sharing your outstanding skills with all of us in the hobby! - Lyle
