The above videos are submitted by Best Pilots customer, Sean McHale of Pennsylvania. This guy just keeps "upping the ante" on what is possible with scale RC aircraft! Sean has guaranteed his new ESM 74” Corsair will turn at least one head at the flying field! Not only has he integrated authentic engine sounds, machine gun sounds, and an opening canopy, but after painting his Pappy Boyington figure (nice job by the way Sean) and doing a little surgery, Sean’s Pappy now turns his head when the ailerons are activated! Totally AWESOME! Here is how he did it:
“ There really wasn't a lot to it. I used a 2-56 thread rod epoxied into his head, then ran that through a carbon tube in his body down through the floor. By the way, the rod was nice to hold while painting the head.
I just ran the carbon tube down below the floor far enough to clear the pull-pull cables. On the thread rod I added a nylon control arm and connected it to a mini servo slaved off the aileron channel.
I did need to sand a little around the base of his neck as well as inside his collar to allow the head to turn. Also the carbon tube extends a fraction above the body so the head pivots on the carbon tube and not on the body.” - Sean
Great job Sean and man does that Corsair paint-job look authentic or what?! Just the way I always envision them to look, the well-used rugged warbird that they were.
By the way, after showing my 5 and 3 year old sons the video, they wanted to watch it over and over. They are now convinced that Daddy’s pilots come to life! Thanks for sharing your creativity and incredible talents Sean!
